插图：The tetrameric structure of hemoglobin allows cooperative binding 0foxygen in that binding of oxygen to the heme molecule of the first subunitfacilitates binding to the other three.This enhanced binding is due toallosteric changes of the hemoglobin molecule,accounting for its s-shapedoxygen-saturation curve as compared with that of myoglobin（see Fig.8 0fthe High，Yield Facts）.At the lower oxygen saturations in peripheral tissues（Po,30－40）.hemoglobin releases much more oxygen（up to 50％desatu－rated）than myoglobin with its single polypeptide structure.
