与其他类型教材相比，本套教材具有如下的显著特点：    1．严格按照《全国各类成人高等教育英语（非专业）教学大纲》以及《全国各类成人高等教育英语（非专业）考试大纲》的要求来编写，这是我们选材的依据与出发点。    2．文章内容文理兼顾，这为成人高等教育英语教学及其改革起到导向与规范作用。    3．认真贯彻“理论联系实际”、“学用结合”、“各种能力并重”以及“教、学、考”三者相互照应等原则。    4．克服忽视听说技能训练的弱点，加强听说技能，特别是实用交际能力等的训练。    5．文章题材新颖，体裁广泛，其内容、语言特色等能与时代旋律有机结合。    6．以语言为基础，以学生为中心。一本教材成败的关键在于能否将学生的被动接收转化为主动学习，因此，我们在编写过程中始终坚持让学生能在比较愉快、轻松的氛围中学习英语，掌握学习英语的技巧，想方设法将枯燥的语言学习变得兴趣盎然。    7．结合课文，边学边练；体例新颖，便于教学；内容充实，利于备考。    8．注解详细，适合自学。考虑到成人高校学生上课时间不多，他们主要是通过自学的方式去学习英语，因此，教材中每篇课文后都有较详细的注释。这些详细的注释有利于使用本教材的读者加深对课文的理解，因此教师不必再花太多的宝贵课堂教学时间去讲解课文，而可以将更多的课堂时间用在提高学生的语言应用能力上，从而使学生真正成为课堂教学的主角。    9．轻松英语阅读，培养学习兴趣。为了使英语学习不再像以往那样枯燥无味，使学生能够真正从“要我学”转变为“我要学”，使他们知道“英语原来这么有趣”，我们在编写时安排了一个个诙谐幽默的故事和一些匠心独运、慧眼独具的连珠妙语。    10．《成人英语》对阅读课文的长度以及生词出现的数量都有适当的控制。根据第二语言或外语习得理论，阅读文章的长度和生词量之间应该有一定的比例关系。课文长度是一个值得注意的问题：课文过长，会造成课堂教学操作上的困难；课文过短，会使生词相对集中；生词量过多，会造成学习者理解上的困难，而频繁的查阅生词会挫伤学习者的阅读积极性。    11．每课均涉及同一主题，两篇文章各有侧重。围绕这些与学生生活和工作息息相关的热门话题，学生可以在教师的指导下充分发挥其学习的主动性，进行一定的语言活动，提高语言的应用能力。由于话题相同，词汇复现率大大提高，有助于学生提高单词记忆效果。
