前言

　　本词典系英语新词语双解词典（The New Century Dictionary of English Neologisms with Chinese Translation），与单语词典（monolingual dictionary）和英汉单解词典（English一Chinese dictionary）相比有其独特性。　　它既吸取了单语词典的精髓，又糅合了英汉单解词典的特点，可谓博采众长，兼收并蓄，交相辉映，相得益彰。　　《新世纪英语新词语双解词典》以收录新词语之广和新著称，又以例证之丰富见长，就其规模而言，居国内出版的同类词典之首。　　它搜集了50年代至90年代出现的新词语，共收25，000余词条。这为当代英语的研究提供了颇有价值的信息。编者参阅了国内外出版的有关新词语的大量资料（如Reader's Digest Altoac and Yearbook[1 980]， Time the 1980 Hammond Almanac，12，000 Words[A Supplement to Webster’5 Third New International Dictionary]，A Dictionary of New English，THe Second Barnhart Dictionary of New English，The Morrow Book of New Words，The Longman Register of New Words[1989，1 990]，The Oxford Dictionary of New Words[1 99 1]，The New New Words Dictionary[1994]，The Barnhart Dictionary（bmpanion[1990，1991，1992，1993，1995，1997，1998]，American Speech，[1 99 1，1 992，1 993，l 996，l 997，l 998]，复旦大学外文系主编的《现代英语研究》、《现代英语动态》等），从中进行了筛选和甄别，并以A Supplement to the Oxford Englidh Dictionary为蓝本，利用也脑，编写了特殊程序，对收集的新词语进行抽样核实和查验，以确定出现的年份。此外，我们直接从英美现代报刊中摘引资料，整理成卡，如：Aum ShinrikyoTaliban，Asian Pacific Economic Coop．eration（FOrum）（APEC），acid house，interactivefiction，information highway，tweener（工人家庭出身的专业人员tablescape，table setters，synthpop，naked short—selling，multimikingmego，hush kit，hell camp，dramedy等。上述这些词至今未见于英美最近出版的辞书。　　目前国内出版的英语新词语双解词典均未或很少提供实例。本词典以其丰富而精彩的例证在辞书编纂方面填补了空白。　　Fat City，fat city Slang．①an extremely com fortable　　of life；the state of being well．off；an excellen t prospect．“肥城”；极舒适的境况；生活富裕；前程无量：Johnny announced that he was in“fat city”and everything was“swave”．约翰尼宣称他“生活非常富裕”，且万事如意。　　／The whiz kid from situation or condition the Bronx has finally achieved Fat City．
