　　For this purpose， one day， he told his sons tobring him a bundle of chopsticks. When the sonshad done so， he put the chopsticks together into abundle. Then， he placed it into the hands of theeldest son and ordered him to break it in pieces.The son tried with all his strength， but was notable to do it. Then， the father asked the other sonsto do the same thing， and got the same result.Then， the father opened the bundle， took thechopsticks separately， one by one， and again putthem into his sons' hands. He next asked them tobreak the chopsticks in their hands again， and thistime， they broke the chopsticks easily. The sons were quite puzzled， when the fathersaid， "My sons， if you are of one mind， and uniteto help each other， you will be as this bundle， thatis， even if you meet with strong enemies and terribledifficulties， you will not be injured as long as youunite as one but on the other hand， if you aredivided among yourselves， you will be broken aseasily as these chopsticks. "
