　　Because of the long history of Chinese characters, the vast territory in whiqh they wereused, and the large population of people using them, the number of books and recordswritten in Chinese continued to grow. In addition, for various reasons related to engraving,typesetting and proofreading, Chinese characters developed into what seemed like a stateof disorder: there are many characters, many variant characters, and some characters havetoo many strokes. As a result, Chinese characters became difficult to learn, to recognize,to write and to use. This led to the need to simplify Chinese characters.The simplification of Chinese characters is part of the revolution of Chinese characters.This simplification included a reduction in the number of strokes and the number ofcharacters. The set of post-simplification characters is known as "simplified characters"）. The set of preisimplification Chinese characters is called　（f6ntTzi: "complex characters" or "traditional characters"）.In fact, simplified characters emerged as early as the oracle and bronze scripts. In otherwords, the simplification of Chinese characters began during Chinas Shang Dynasty and,thereafter, simplified characters appeared in virtually every historical period.The modern simplification of Chinese characters began during the early 20th century. Atthat time, Qian Xuantong, Li Jinxi and other scholars made great efforts. In the 1950s,after the founding of the Peoples Republic of China, the Chinese government speciallyestablished the Committee on Reform of the Chinese Language to conduct focusedresearch on the simplification of Chinese characters. In 1964, Chinas State Council issuedthe Table of Simplified Chinese Characters; in 1986, the Table of Simplified ChineseCharacters was revised and reissued.
