　　The overall aim of Thinking and Writing Processes in English is to help upper secondary schooland/or beginning university students to improve their communicative competences in English whilepractising critical thinking and gaining understanding of and tolerance for other peoples ideas. Theprimary pedagogical focus is on writing， but the book offers an integrated course in reading andwriting with plenty of speaking opportunities as well. As researches show， such integrated activitieswill help students improve their language skills in English.　　Students will be working with the most common expository and argumentative text types.Special emphasis is put on three of them —— causal analysis， problem solving， and pureargumentation.

　　Do our parents always ask us to do things at home or to run errands？ Or， do you， like me，have to take a job sometimes after school to help meet family expenses？　　3 If these are the causes， we can do something about them simply by asking ourteachers to give us less homework and to consult with each other so that not all longassignments~ come at the same time. But we would have to ask them as a group， ofcourse， since they would not listen to an individual student. Parents will be more difficult todeal with， and some of our parents may of course really need help when both of themwork. Giving up extra work may be possible too， if you can afford it.　　4 But I do not think that we would be stress-free even if these causes could beremoved. Is there not something about modem life being too fast， too hectic~ generallythat is the real root of our stress？ If this is true， we cannot of course eliminate such causes，but we have to find different ways of relaxing for a while from the rush of life. I do notmean with the help of medicines， but by activities that make us relax.　　5 Taking a cigarette is such a relaxing activity， some say. But that does not helpus get things done. Smoking is also bad for your health， and to have to worry aboutthat as well does not strike me as a possible solution. In fact smoking might increase theproblem.
