《最简句法入门:探究英语的结构》是作者继其1997年所著、由剑桥大学出版社出版的两本教材《句法理论和英语结构》和《句法:最简方案介绍》后出版的又一本有关最简方案的句法学教材。与1997年出版的《句法:最简方案介绍》相比,《最简句法入门:探究英语的结构》在内容和形式上都有所改变。相对来说,《句法:最简方案介绍》的内容高度浓缩,行文节奏较快,要求读者有一定的理论基础,因此适用于语言学专业的高年级本科生和研究生。《最简句法入门:探究英语的结构》针对的读者则是学习普通语言学的学生,修读过语言学入门的本科生即可使用。因此作者行文时,尽可能使用通俗的语言和形象的比喻来诠释艰涩的术语和抽象概念,这大大增强了《最简句法入门:探究英语的结构》的可读性。 与《句法:最简方案介绍》一书相同,《最简句法入门:探究英语的结构》共分10章,其中第1-5章及第8章的标题两书基本一致。在《句法:最简方案介绍》一书中,“主语”为一个单独的章节,而《最简句法入门:探究英语的结构》则将其糅进第7章“A移位”及第8章“呼应,格位与移位”。《句法:最简方案介绍》的第9章“VP嵌套”在《最简句法入门:探究英语的结构》第9章“分裂投射”中作为一则实例来讨论。而《最简句法入门:探究英语的结构》第10章“语段”则是全新的内容。因为《最简句法入门:探究英语的结构》语言通俗易懂、书中例证浅显贴切、叙述节奏较缓,因此《最简句法入门:探究英语的结构》篇幅较长。而且为帮助读者自学,每章后面都配两套有针对性的练习题。每套练习题均提供了相关暗示,以引导读者解题。作者为每套题的第一题作了示范解答,供读者答其他题目时参照。 同其他学科领域一样,在确定研究方向和检验研究成果时,语言学将标准确立在自然性、简约性、精致性、解释性等几项指标上。由于柏拉图的问题(即为何人类不必事事亲历便能获得对世间事物的认知。反映在语言能力上,就是为何儿童不必有人教就能独立操控自己的母语。)
