前言

　　全世界大概没有人不熟悉莎士比亚这个名字，即使在非英语国家莎士比亚也几乎是家喻户晓。他那脍炙人口的十四行诗，鼓舞人心的喜剧，催人泪下的悲剧，无一不让读者和观众交口传诵。莎士比亚离开人世已近400年，为什么至今对读者和观众的吸引力仍经久不衰？这不仅是因为他的爱情诗篇真挚感人，戏剧作品情节引人人胜，而且因为他同时还是一位语言大师。现今人们日常使用的英语词汇中，很多都是由这位语言大师第一次使用之后而成为英语词汇的，或是因为他的使用使原来的词义发生了根本性的变化。莎士比亚到底给英语创造了多少词汇？有人说至少几百个，有人说上万个，但学术界公认的是1500个左右。尽管文艺复兴时期的其他作家也为英语增添过不少词汇，如本·琼生（BenJonson），但没有哪位作家能比得上莎士比亚。有人作过统计，莎士比亚在他的戏剧和诗歌中使用的词汇多达两万多个。
