Writing/Reading Skill Extension: My Favorite Scene Students write about their favorite movie scene without identifying the film, and others try to guess what it is. 1.Ask students to silently think about films they have seen and remember one scene that particularly impressed them. They will write about the scene in a single paragraph. 2.Before students start to write, caution them not to identify the name of the movie. They may mention names of characters, settings, or other details. Students write their own names on their papers. 3.After students have finished, circulate the papers so that others can read them. When readers think they know the name of the film, they should check with the writer. They should not write the name on the paper, so that others have a chance to guess. Listening/Speaking Skill Extension; Creating a Scene Small groups of students discuss what makes movie scenes memorable, 1.Students work in groups of four. Their task is to think about movie scenes that were made unforgettable by makeup or special effects. 2.Allow time for each group to discuss a variety of films before choosing one they all agree on. The group then lists the ways that makeup or special effects were used creatively. 3.Each group takes a turn describing their scene to the rest of the crass. After they have described how the scene was created, allow time for other students to add information. Integrated Skill Extension: Name the Genre Students make up a review for a film and others have to guess the genre. 1.Start by reviewing the different types or genres of films that were covered earlier in the unit. It may be helpful to write these genres on the board. 2.Students work in pairs to write a brief review or movie description similar to those at the beginning of unit 3 (page 31), The reviews may be based on real films, but they should be fictional. They should exaggerate the qualities of particular genres. 3.Each pair reads their review to the rest of the class. Students try to guess what type of film it is. Note: Sometimes a film can be a mix of several different types. For example, James Bond films combine action, adventure, mystery, and romance.
