In the first few encountersshe learns that language must be scrutinised since it is not transparent. Whenshe perceives Mrs Allen's pleasure in Henry's mimicked conversation she beginsto see how people might be manipulated by speech. Henry also instructs her inthe ulterior uses of talk for flirtation, suggesting how the refusal to answer anintentionally forward or impolite question can lead to intimacy. By the timeshe is actually complimented by him as having a mind 'warped by an innateprinciple of general integrity', Catherine's unsentimental education has goneso far that she has an inkling of irony. In due course Henry's encouragementdraws out what is in Catherine rather than imposing a system from without. When they have been in the abbey for some time she receives her brother'sletter revealing Isabella's desertion; Henry prompts Catherine to express con-ventional sentimental anguish over her friend's duplicity and waits for her toachieve the correct judicious response.
