本书以国内外认知心理学和语方学相关理论为基础，以全新的视野和具体可行的方法，本着对现今英语阅读和写作教学的不足进行补充和完善为目的，提出了更为有效的教学方法和策略。    全书分十章，前五章为阅读部分，后五章为写作部分。    第一章介绍英语阅读的概念、本质阅读的组成部分、阅读的心理模式和方式。第二章介绍影响阅读因素，主要包括读者的认知、元认知知识和学习策略。第三章主要介绍有效阅读教学的理论和具体案例。有效阅读教法主要依据娴熟阅读者的阅读策略和方法，提出教师的教法应按照阅读的前期、中期和后期阶段采用以传授阅读技巧和提高学生阅读理解能力为目的的综合性教学模式。在具体案例中，附有详细的教案和教学步骤等。第四章进一步深入、具体介绍阅读中几项得要基本技能的教法。第五章是在前四章理论基础上时行认知、元认知阅读策略培训效果的实证性研究。实验结果证明，实验班在培训后，阅读成绩显著提高。同时，高、中、低三等级阅读水平学生的培训效果也各有不同：中等和低等学生的成绩提高显著；高水平学生成绩提高不显著。这一结果对于大多数中、差学生的阅读成绩提高有着十分现实的意义。第六章从大学英语四、六级考试样品作文分析的基础上提出优秀作文的标准和组成因素；也从中美学生对同题作文的写作差异上得出地道英文作文的特点。第七章介绍写作的理论、心理模式和写作实质。专爱认为写作是一种心过渡过程；其心理加工模式又分为直线形加工模式和螺旋形加工模式。在认定与作是认知行为的基础上，结合写作的社会性提出写作的实质既是心理的又是社会。第八章对现今国内外流行的结果与作教法、过程写作教法和体裁写作教法分析后，提出了体裁教法的有效性；并分析了七大常见体裁的语篇结构和语言特色。第九章介绍有效写作教学的各个环节。写前阶仙主要包括思想风暴、构思、自由写作和提出问题等准备活动；写中阶段主要介绍各种具体的写作技巧，主要包括如何写出符合英语逻辑思维的段落；写后阶段主要介绍修改和校对的技巧以及教师评价和同伴评价的使用。第十章阐述了读写一体化的理论和现实意义。
