章节摘录
Dimitri was amazed to find that the lamb hadbeeome white. He took a close look at it and rec-ognized it as his own. This diseovery at onee caused an angry scenebetween Dimitri and Aleko. Dimitri repeated hisaccusation that Aleko had stolen his lamb, butAleko still rejected any theft. During the violentargument, Dimitri said the rain had proved that thelamb had been dyed black and he recognized it atonce as the one he had given to his wife, WhenAleko finally denied he had stolen the lamb,Dimi-tri called the poliee. Aleko was arrested and Dimi-tri took his lamb home. The story led to a lot of excitement in the vil-lage. The villagers didnt often have the chance totalk about such an important event and they weregreatly amused by what had happened. Somethought Aleko had been very bright. Othersthought he had been extremely dull. Others saidGod had sent the rain to punish Aleko for hiserime and to confirm he was a thief. They dis-cussed the event at great length for a long time, asthere wasnt much else to talk about in a villagewhere nothing mueh ever took place.
