版权页：   插图：   We can learn something from how the Red Army developed its relationship with the farmers, which was to work, eat and live together with them but refuse to take anything from them. (Armies in the past had always ravaged the farms.) We had a better way to doing things back then like "borrow the wind" (to know when your own knowledge is not enough) and "to borrow the prevailing wind" (change strategies according to facts on the ground).The army gathered the support of the peasants. It was an effective plan of action. We need to think from the point of view of others. Then we can see how to move forward. Everyone needs to consider what the villagers want, instead of telling them what to do to become successful. This is the start of good communication.For example, my students at CAU and researchers at Henan University needed to find places to do fieldwork during summer vacations. Leaders of villages always ask me to invite such students. We have had some 50 stu-dents working in Yuanlou, Sanshi, Woshen and Zhanzhuang villages. Research is the basic work of county-village cooperation. It needs to "start from what the villagers know, and be about how to help change what they have," James Yen said. What do farmers know? What do they have? These answers should be in the research. Every morning, under my direction, students do research with family members in the village. They observe the local governance,ecological resources, market system, social ethics and cultural beliefs.Since the research of the objects are human beings we should respect their feelings and ways of thinking. Especially since they are the most disadvan-taged group in society, researchers have to double their respect and good-will first. Then the farmers will be more willing to take part in the research and not be so reticent.
