PART 5Expo Delight--A Rendezvous to Remember with Global Guests The owering of the World Expo Shanghai flagon the evening of October 31, 2010, marked theconclusion of the successful, splendid, unforgettableWorld Expo Shanghai, which more than fulfilled all itscommitments. Among the 73.09 million Expo visitorsduring its 184-day duration were more than 100foreign heads of state and political figures. Shanghai'stotal 1.03 million-influx of visitors was its largest ever. The Expo acted as a diplomatic arena that enhancedforeigners' understanding of China, and forgedprofound friendships among global citizens. The unforgettable 184-day experience is now partof World Expo history. Visitors, workers, volunteers, and ordinary Shanghai folks will remember forever thepart they played in this super event, the people theymet and their experiences. After trial operations beganon April 20, more than 70,000 volunteers worked inthe Expo Park, 100,000 at civil service stations and1.97 million throughout the streets and communitiesof Shanghai. They stayed at their posts through 40-degree Celsius heat and thunderstorms, and dailyhandled a 1.03 million visitor-flow. Their dedicationand persistence personified China's confidence andpleasure in playing host to this world event. Smiles in reaction to amazing performances andamusing incidents were everywhere at the Expo Park. Maori culture was the focus of the New ZealandPavilion. The roof garden was festooned with Maorisculptures of various sizes, and Maori performersinvited visitors to join them in the war-like Maoridance. Blue-clad workers in the USA Pavilion presenteda "Learn the Shanghai Dialect" activity. The subtledifferences between this southern idiom and theMandarin spoken throughout China produced somehowlers. The portfolio of one photographer included asmile-file, which he regards as his most precious Expomemento. The upside for people waiting patiently inline--often for as long as five or six hours--to enterExpo pavilions was that it gave them the chance tomake new friends and compare expo tour experiences. The "Welcome to the World Expo 2010 Shanghai"slogan in red characters over Expo entrances gave animpression on the closing day of reluctance to end thehappy event. Hundreds of thousands of tourists stillimmersed in the joy of the Expo lingered to watch songand dance performances at the various pavilions.
