章节摘录
Essexs growth was to be organic, trying to do a few things well. In choosing subjects, Essex first took into account national need and was advised by the UGC not to pursue the professional subjects (defined as medicine, dentistry, agriculture and veterinary science) ; second, the special features of the region; and the third, the balance of subjects within the University itself. Sloman advocated that universities should work much more closely both with industry and research institutions Essexs three schools were to provide a base for the study of electronics and other branches of engineering, which were the leading industries in the county. Future plans included the development of a separate school of engineering, of education and of management studies. In the school of comparative studies, Essex adopted a more contemporary and more international approach than was common at that time, focusing on Russia, North America and Latin America. Essex, in common with several of its peers, aimed for a broader curriculum in the first year and argued that the peak of specialization should be achieved in graduate study, not at undergraduate level. Sloman s vision of the growth of the university coincided with the anticipated growth of Colchester and Wivenhoe, since it is only a matter of time before the university town, at presentstanding alone, joins hands with both.
