前言

　　古希腊哲人柏拉图尝言诗歌模仿低劣的激情而损害了高贵的理性，因此应当驱逐出城邦1。许多人由此断定柏拉图敌视诗歌，其实不然，他的话里暗藏玄机：首先，柏拉图要放逐的是抒情诗和史诗，不包括雅正无邪的颂诗2；其次，他提出禁止喜剧和讽刺诗3，但未曾提到悲剧4。这不是出于疏忽，而是有意的沉默（emphatic silence）。不久，他就在《法律篇》中借“雅典人”之口道出了自己的真实想法：我们也是悲剧诗人，而且我们作的悲剧是最好、最高的；我们整个城邦是对最好、最高生活的模仿，悲剧的真谛即在于此；这是最高的戏剧，只有真正的法律能完善它5。谁是真正的诗人？柏拉图的答案昭然若揭：城邦生活（civil life）即人类文明（civilization）的立法者6。　　柏拉图所说的“诗人”，即中国古人所说的“作者”7。孔子日：“作者七人矣。”（《论语·宪问》）这七人是伏羲、神农、黄帝、尧、舜、禹、汤8。他们何以为“作者”？考诸《易·系辞下》：“古者包牺氏之王天下也……作结绳而为罔罟，以佃以渔……包牺氏没，神农氏作，斫木为耜，揉木为耒，耒耨之利以教天下……神农氏没，黄帝、尧、舜氏作，通其变，使民不倦，神而化之，使民宜之。

内容概要

本书节选了托马斯·莫尔、培根、弥尔顿、霍布斯、牛顿、洛克、柏克莱、休谟、亚当·斯密、柏克、潘恩、边沁、马尔萨斯、约翰·密尔、达尔文等十五位英国作家的经典著作。    这十五人不仅是思想巨子，也是文章大家。他们的著作见证了人文主义、乌托邦社会主义、经验主义、机械唯物主义、主观唯心主义、怀疑主义、自由主义、保守主义、激进主义、功利主义、进化论等近现代思想的发生和发展，是英国乃至两方现代性的源代码和标志文献，体现了现代人文的发展脉络与基本风貌。

　　It is the liberty, Lords and Commons, which your own valorous and happy counsels have purchased us, liberty which is the nurse Liberty is the nurse of all great wits. of all great wits; this is that which hath rarefied and enlightened our spirits like the influence of heaven; this is that which hath enfranchised, enlarged and lifted up our apprehensions, degrees above themselves.　　Ye cannot make us now less capable, less knowing, less eagerly pursuing of the truth, unless ye first make yourselves, that made us so, less the lovers, less the founders of our true liberty. We can grow ignorant again, brutish, formal and slavish, as ye found us; but you then must first become that which ye cannot be, oppressive, arbitrary and tyrannous, as they were from whom ye have freed us. That our hearts are now more capacious, our thoughts more erected to the search and expectation of greatest and exactest things, is the issue of your own virtue propagated in us; ye cannot suppress that, unless ye reinforce an abrogated　　and merciless law, that fathers may dispatch at will their own　　children2. •   书自然是好书，可当当送过来的货装帧很有问题！来回来却发现书页普遍往上扬了20°，使排版好不整齐，整本书都是这样，显得印刷其烂无比。真不知道怎么办才好，能找谁换？。但是书是没问题的，不知道是当当货出了问题还是怎么了……
•   书还没看完，大概浏览了一下。是英文版的，想看汉语的看好，别买错了。
