本书从语言比较和理论语言学的立场，阐述了什么是限定范畴，语言是如何表达限定范畴的。尽管从语用的层面讲，限定是一个普遍的概念，但并不是所有的语言都有限定范畴；在许多语言中，它仅仅表现在代词系统中；限定范畴有被人称范畴吞并的趋势；所有格中也不天然地蕴涵着限定关系。    本文作者搜集了大量的语言，考察其中的限定范畴以及相关的各种语法表现形式（例如指示语、所有格、人称代词等），以及限定标记的产生和演变。从当代的语义学、语用学和句法学多层面展开论述，有很多非常富有启迪意义的发现。
