前言

PREFACEThree things make a revision of this book desirable. First the plates of the older edition are so worn out that no more copies can be printed from them. Second teachers who have taught the book have from time to time sent me suggestions useful in rewriting this elementary manual. Third some things that appeared crude or unnatural to me while teaching it myself must be done away with.In my work of revision I have rewritten many of the lessons. I have omitted a number of words that seemed useless and have added others. Several pictures have also been changed. New words which were formerly indicated by underscoring， are now indicated by little dots under the vowels of these words. In a word of two or more syllables the dot is placed under the vowel of the stressed syllable. This change is made because underscorings attract too much of the pupils attention. I hope that this change as well as others will mean a real improvement.I have been helped in my work by Professor Donald Roberts of St. John’s University，Shang-hai who has read through the book in manuscript form and has made such changes in the sentences as were necessary to make themmore idiomatic. From his corrections in the manuscript I have learned much that will help me m the further preparation of English textbooks. 　　《英语模范读本》是由周越然主编、商务印书馆出版的一套民国时期的畅销英文课本，其受欢迎的程度，着实令人难以想象。第一册出版不到两月，便已告罄。尽管“商务”印制能力强大，随时添印，可仍在一年左右时间，不能完全满足市场。《英语模范读本》不仅畅销一时，还长销不衰，几乎创造了一个英语教科书出版奇迹。据周越然自己计算，该书风行的数十年间，销量逾百万册：“在此25年中，华人自编之外国语读物，绝无胜过其耐久力或超过其畅销性者。”
　　周越然没有出过“洋”，在学习英语过程中，甘苦冷暖，比受到正规教育的感受更深刻许多，他通过竞选而最后编出的《民国英语读本》中学教材，能够结合实际，更加得到老师和学生的喜爱。
　　《民国英语读本》从内容上看，周越然的编写确实富有特色。第一册，主要是关于日常用语、人体部位名称、学校常见物品、家庭会话等，课后还附有发音、抄写、文法等相关练习。第二册，主要是介绍美国的日常生活，如方位、街道、火车、轮船、汽车、电车、图书馆、医院、公园等等，还附加一些有趣味浅易的小故事。第三册，主要介绍英国的一些情况。比第二册多了一些文化内容，譬如英国人的家庭、他们会客拜客的礼节、宗教、婚庆、度量衡、纪念日等。总体来看，周越然编写的这部教材，思路明确，注意到学生的兴味所在，最后得到社会的普遍欢迎，风靡数十年，确实因其显著特色。
　　对于现代英语学习者来讲，《民国英语读本》这是一套经典的课本，也是一种很好的学习素材。

作者简介

　　
周越然（1885－1962），浙江吴兴（今湖州）人，字之彦，20世纪初叶著名藏书家。他精通英语，曾在江苏高等学堂、安徽高等学校和上海中国公学任教。他是严复的学生，得到过辜鸿铭的赏识，戴季陶曾向他从学，是他的弟子。
　　
1915年，经商务印书馆英文部部长邝耀西保荐进入出版社，任英文部科长、函授学社副社长。从事翻译校读工作，后参与函授教育、编校讲义、批改函授课卷等。他以编著《英语模范读本》闻名，还大量编译各种英文书籍，如《英文启蒙读本》、《国民英语入门》、《英文造句法》等。他喜爱藏书，其藏书楼名为"言言斋"，一幢西式二层楼房，地处上海闸北，被毁于"一·二八"战火中，所藏书亦随之化为灰烬。
　　
1949年以后，他到上海水产学院教授英语。后因俄语风行，学校不再开英文课而辍教，到图书馆工作，直到1955年辞归，时年70岁。1962年病逝。
　　
周越然著有《六十回忆》、《书书书》等著作，自述藏书经历。近年出版的图书有《英语歧字辨异》、《言言斋书话》、《书与回忆》、《言言斋西书丛谈》、《版本与书籍》、《言言斋性学札记》、《周越然书话》、《言言斋古籍丛谈》等。

•   很好奇民国时期的英语课本内容是怎么样的，刚收到就翻了看看，好像和现在讲的还是有些差别，不过，看看也不错，感觉这个比现在的小学课本更适合小学生，每课后面还有些许练习题。如果还有译文就更好了。

•   网传此套书籍很经典，所以，当时就迫不及待地下了订单。但是，拿到书后，只随便翻阅了第一册就发现了很多拼写错误，以及漏标点的情况，后来发现第二册的错误更多。真不知道当初校对的人员到底在干什么，还是压根就没校对！？出版这种劣质的书籍，既是对作者的侮辱，也是对读者的极端不负责任。态度真是恶劣至极！！！
