The Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway is a project withthe most investment and technology content in the Medium-and Long-term Program for the Railway Network approved bythe State Council in early 2004. It is the first high-speed railwaymeeting advanced international standards in China. It runs1,318 km, almost parallel to the existing Beijing-Shanghai Rail-way. In the future, the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railwaywill be used specially for passenger transport, while the Bei-jing-Shanghai Railway will be used mainly for freight transport. The Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway is a double-track onewith a planned speed of 350 kph, and 300 kph during the earlierperiod of its service. The line will have 21 stations when it iscompleted and put into operation in 2010. By that time, it willtake only five hours from Beijing to Shanghai (about nine hoursshorter than the present journey) and it will carry 80 millionpassengers each way a year. Moreover, the trains leave at shortintervals, with one train running every three minutes duringpeak time. The Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway will use high-speedwheel track technology, over 70 percent of which has beendeveloped by China itself. According to the Medium- andLong-term Program for the Railway Network, by 2020 thelength of railway lines in service will have increased from 73,000km at the end of 2003 to 100,000 km. Busy arteries will haveseparate passenger and freight lines, and double-track and elec-tric railways will reach 50 percent of the total.
