In 1949, the local population stoodat 534,000, while in 1980, it had soared to 1.58 millionand by the year 2000, the number went up to 2.38million. The population density reached 78.28 persquare kin, far exceeding the critical standard for dif-ferent regions proposed by the United Nations in 1978of seven per square km in arid regions and 20 in semi-arid regions. For survival, people pillaged nature lead-ing to deforestation, over cultivation and over grazing.For example, cultivated land increased from 7.48 mil-lion mu （498,000 hectares） in 1949 to 14.14 million mu（943,000 hectares） in 1997. The massive destruction ofprimitive forests and excessive land reclamation in-flicted serious damage on the ecology.
