wealth also shared by the whole world. On 12th of December of 1985,
China joined the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World
Cultural and Natural Heritage and on October 29 of 1999, was

章节摘录
插图:by mankind in history to be advanced by several hundred thousand years.0n the site, five layers of ashes, three heaps of ashes of bumed substances together with a great amount of burned bones were found. The thickest of the heaps of ashes was up to 6 m high. All these testify that Peking Man had known how to make use offire and keep the kindling and known to select some rocks or stones to make weapons or production implements.Peking Man was a species of protoho minid in the middle,as a link,of the development from the paleopithecus(fossil anthropolid)to the homo sapiens(man). The discovery has produced a significant impact on the research of biology and the history of human development. In 1961.the Peking Man site was designated by the State Council as one in the first group of the key cultural relics under state protection. In l 987.it was listed by UNESCO as one of the sites of World Cultural Heritage. The evaluation madebytheWHCis:ScientifiC work at the site, which lies 42 km south-west of Beijing, is still underway. So far,it has led to the discovery of the remains of Sinanthropus pekinensis, who lived in the Middle Pleistocene, along with various objects, and remains of Homo sapiens dating as far back as 18,000-11000 B.C.The site is not only an exceptional reminder of the prehistorical human societies of the Asian continent, but also illustrates the process of evolution.
