　　全国英语等级考试(Public English Test
System，简称PETS)是教育部考试中心设计并负责的全国性英语水平考试。PETS是我国惟一面向全体社会公民的多级别的权威英语测试体系，人们可以根据自己的英语水平选择参加其中任何一个级别的考试。PETs分为笔试和口试两个相对独立的考查部分，对考生听、说、读、写等能力进行全面考查，对合格者颁发相应的英语等级证书，以满足社会上英语能力鉴定和人才市场的需求。
　　高等教育自学考试专科和本科的公共英语考试己分别承认PETs一2和PETS一3考试。PET8—5考试已经替代了主要用于评价公派出国留学人员英语水平的全国外语水平考试(WSK)中的英语水平考试(EPT)。PETS一2和IPETS一4考试的标准和题型已经用于改造了全国普通高考和全国硕士研究生入学统一考试中的英语考试。有关省份的普通高考英语听力考试成绩采用了PETs一2听力考试成绩，高考外语类考生的口试使用了PETS－2口试。

　　The day was like any other day in his life. Tom walked past the shop on the street comer. He stopped to look at the front row of shoes， and he felt happy to see that the pair of shoes he wanted very much were still there. Looking down， he felt sorry for himself. He really wanted to have them for his birthday.　　He sadly walked away and thought how to tell his mother about it. He knew she would give him anything he liked if she could. But he also knew very well she had little money. He decided not to go home at once because he didn't want his mother to be worded about him. So he went to the park and sat on the grass. Then he saw a boy in a wheel chair. He notice that the boy moved the wheel with his hands. Tom looked at his own feet， "It's much better than being without feet." He thought， there was no reason to feel sorry and sad. 　　……
