The Japan Coast Guard (JCG), formerly the Maritime Safety Agency, is a government organization founded on May 1st, 1948, modeled after the organization of the United States Coast Guard established in 1790. Comprising about 12,500 personnel, JCG is under the oversight of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and is responsible for the protection of the coastlines of Japan. The duty of the JCG is to ensure security and safety at sea. Ever since its established, the JCG has been engaged day and night in a variety of activities, including maritime safety operations, search and rescue operations, criminal investigations, marine environment preservation, disaster mitigation, marine research, hydrographic and oceanographic activities, maintenance and operation of aids to navigation, while strengthening and improving its structure, human resources and equipment. To the day of April 1,2009, the JCG has been equipped with 455 vessels and craft of all types and 73 aircraft. Headquartered in Tokyo, the JCG is divided into five departments of Administration, Equipment and Technology, Guard and Rescue, Hydrographic and Oceanographic, and Maritime Traffic. And it has divided the nation into eleven regions to facilitate its coast guard operations. Each region maintains a Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, under which there are various Coast Guard Offices, Coast Guard Stations, Air Stations, Hydrographic Observatory, and Traffic Advisory Service Centers.
