章节摘录
celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.Questions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you have just heard.11. What did the England's poor people do during Mothering Sunday?12. When did Mother's Day get approved officially in the United States?13. What can we learn about Mother's Day from this passage?Passage 2Drug Abuse Drugs are man-made or naturally occurring substances used without medical supervision basicallyto change the way a person feels, thinks or behaves so that they "can have fun." Alcohol and tobacco areconsidered dangerous but are not called drugs. The term drugs also covers a number of substances that mustbe used under medical supervision to treat illnesses. Drug abuse has many negative effects on health, ranging from minor issues like digestion problems topotentially fatal diseases, like AIDS. Of course, the effects depend on the drug and on the amount, methodand frequency of use. Some drugs are very addictive, like heroin, while others are less so. But the outcomeis that regular drug abuse —— even for a short period of time —— can cause physiological dependence, whichmeans that when the person stops taking drugs, he/she experiences physical withdrawal symptoms and acraving for the drug. Drug abuse also causes brain damage. Again, depending on the drug, the strength and character of thisdamage varies. But one thing is clear, drug abuse affects the way the brain functions and alters its responsesto the world. However, how drug abuse will affect your behavior, actions, feelings and motivations isunpredictable. By interfering in the natural ways the brain functions, abusers expose themselves to risks theymay not even have imagined. Finally, drug abuse damages the ability of people to act as free and conscious beings, capable of takingaction to fulfill their needs. But it is arguable as to how free drug abusers are when they have no control overtheir actions or reactions. To raise awareness of the major problem that drug abuse may cause to health, as well as to inspirepeople and mobilize support for drug control, UNODC establishes a day —— International Day against DrugAbuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking which is celebrated on 26 June with a different theme every year.Questions 14 to 17 are based on the passage you have just heard.14. What is the main idea of this passage?15. Which of the following is true according to the passage?16. What are the negative effects that drug abuse has on people according to the passage?17. What can we learn about International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking?Passage 3Fast Food In spite of the fact that Western fast food chains like KFC and McDonald's which have been criticizedrepeatedly by some people for providing junk food containing too much fat and causing obesity, fast foodis quite popular among people around the world with its quick and convenient service. If people do nothave time to go into a restaurant for a decent meal, they can race over to the nearest KFC or McDonald's andget served in a minute. Therefore, due to the rapid development of society, fast food has become the solerepresentative of the fast pace of modern society.
