章节摘录
The Nature Company dedicates its spring 1990 catalogue "to trees," which endorsesEarth Day, and continues to link itself to the nature Conservancy through posters and aprogram in which you buy a tree for a forest restoration project. Here, a not-for-profit agencyis itself commodified, adding to the value of the commodities offered in the catalogue. "In thiscatalogue, consumption is not merely a means for the construction and representation of theself, it is also a means for political action. Several commodities are offered as "A Few ThingsYou Can Do" to save the earth: a string shopping bag, a solar battery recharger, a homenewspaper recycler. Socially conscious shopping is a liberal practice in every sense. It turnsshopping as a form of election, in which one votes for good commodities or refuses ones voteto bad commodities or services. Both politically informed purchasing and television sales combine the free market andthe electoral process. Dollars are identified with votes, purchases with endorsements. Bothoffer those who engage in them the possibility to "talk back" to manufacturers. In televisionsales shows this ability to talk back is both more thoroughly elaborated and more thoroughlyexploited. Like the "elections" on MTV that invite viewers to vote for their favorite videoby calling a number on their telephones, they permit those who watch to respond, to speak, and to be heard by the television. Their votes, of course, cost money.
