前言

《综合英语教程》（GeneralEnglish）共4册。第一、二册各含16个单元，第三、四册各含14个单元。每个单元由两篇课文组成，分成3大部分：语言技能训练、语言训练和拓展训练。第一部分和第二部分均围绕课文1展开。“语言技能训练”着重培养学生综合使用语言的能力。该部分设有“读前”、“读中”和“读后”各种语言技能活动，以阅读为主线，带动口头表达和书面表达，以提高读、说、写的能力。“语言训练”注重对词汇、结构、语义、修辞、语篇、文体等进行分析和训练，以提高学生使用语言的敏感性和文化意识。课文2为附加阅读，是对课文1在主题、语言和技能上的延伸。“拓展训练”是对本单元语言知识和技能的补充和扩展，旨在较为系统地总结和复习中国学生在英语语言学习中的重点和难点，进一步拓展未来教师应该掌握的语言知识和技能技巧。

　　《综合英语教程》是教育部师范司组织编写的高等师范规划教材。全书共由16个单元组成，每个单元含两篇课文，分成三大部分：语言技能训练、语言训练和拓展训练。练习设计多样，有利于培养学生独立思考和独立解决问题的能力。　　《综合英语教程》可作为高等师范英语专业之用，亦可供非英语专业人员和广大英语爱好者自学英语之用。

Medicare and Medicaid costs for the elderly have similarly soared．They now account for more than 80 percent of all federal money spenton health care．fStatisticaf Abstracts．1 989d）．If the growth of Medicarewere to continue at its present rate．by the year 2000 it would cost more than Social Security--another impossible figure，of course，but one thatshows the collision course we are on．  The growing proportion of the elderly in our population addspressure to increase expenditures for Social Security，Medicare，andMedicaid．That the elderly make up a larger proportion of our population is due to two factors：improvements in sanitation and health care thatallow people to live longer，and the effects aboaion and other forms ofbirth control are having on our population distribution．Consequently,between the years 1 990 and 2000，the population of people 65 and overis expected to grow by 3，300，000，while our college-age population，18．to 24．will shrink by 910，000（Statisticaf Abstracts，1 989e）．
