本书为毒理学医学类百科全书，主要包含了毒理学的重要概念，如计量效应、作用机制、试验程序、靶位等，还收集了与毒理学相关的历史、法律、条例、数据库。对毒理学家会相当有用，同时也适用于医学、法律、科学工作者查阅。    本书是在原版Encyclopedia of Toxicology(2nd edn)的基础上对词条进行的分类重排。编成三卷，分别为精选卷、拓展卷与社科管理卷，更加适合国内读者阅读。本书涵盖了毒理学研究的各个领域，从基础到前沿，甚至一些尚存争议的问题也包含其中。     第二版百科全书汇集了392作者提供的1057条目录，而第一版只包括200名作者提供的749条目录。实际上，第一版中所有条目的内容在第二版中都得到了充实，而某些条目则完全进行了更新。在第二版中新出现的308个条目中，包括鸟类生态毒理学、基准剂量、杀虫剂、计算机毒理学、致癌效力因素、代谢组学、化学事件、蒙地卡罗分析、非致死性化学武器、无脊椎动物生态毒理学、药物滥用、癌症化疗因子和消费产品等等。许多针对特殊化学物的条目都是全新的，而书中搜录的国际组织也得到了很大的扩展。某些条目罗列了许多著名的毒物中毒相关事件：如美国拉夫运河事件、泰晤士海滩事件、切尔诺贝利事件和三里岛事件等。另外许多条目涉及毒理学知识的社会应用，如文化毒理学、环境犯罪、著名投毒者和中毒可件、古代化学生物战以及美国环境运动历史等。因此，新版的毒理学百科全书在长度、广度、以及深度上都对毒理学的许多方面进行了更广泛和深入的概述。

•   这套全英文的百科书涉及毒理学的方方面面,很详细,很全面,具有特别重要的意义,对于从事毒理学研究的科研人员很有价值.而且还列出了参考文献,这对于想进一步拓展了解或研究的人员也有提示作用.但是,本书的导读内容太少,起不到引导读者进一步深入阅读的作用,称为"导读版"似乎有点言过其实.
•   对于英语水平一般的人读起来会有点吃力。这个内容是毒理学基础，但是英文又让人比较难懂，对于英语国家的毒理学初学者比较好。但是对国内毒理学初学者又比较难
