前言

插图：The Beginning of the Internet SystemAbout six years after the first communications satellite was placed in orbit, theAmerican Department of Defense began developing a new project. It began linkingmajor research universities across the United States. The project began in the earlynineteen-seventies.Professors at many American universities do research work for the United StatesGovernment. The Department of Defense wanted to link the universities together tohelp the professors cooperate in their work. Department of Defense officials decided totry to link these universities by computer. The officials believed the computer wouldmake it easier for researchers to send large amounts of information from researchcenter to research center. They believed they could link computers at these universitiesby telephone.They were right. It became very easy to pass information from one university toanother. Uniyersity researchers working on the same project could share large amountsof information very quickly. They no longer had to wait several days for the mail tobring a copy of the research reports.In 1981, this communication system linked only 213 computers. Only nine yearslater, it linked more than350,000 computers. Today experts say it is no longer possibleto ,teU how many computers are linked to the information highway.
