reSchool-K-Alfie Bear wants to play rough-and-tumble with his
two new siblings, but his mother tells him that they're too young
and suggests that he go outside and find a treat for them.
Everything she recommends, however, is replaced by a wildly
inappropriate gift as the little bear walks in the springtime
meadow, lakeside, and forest. Children will be amused by Alfie's
ideas, and the book has a certain charm, particularly in Walters's
portraits of the ursine family. The scenery is often lovely but the
text is sometimes difficult to read when it is printed on darker
illustrations. Joanna Cole's I'm a Big Sister and I'm a Big Brother
(both Morrow, 1997) are more straightforward, thorough, and fun,
but Play Gently would be a welcome addition to large collections
seeking additional selections on children and their young
siblings.
